Campaign Story
The Elderly Home in Prishtina takes care of elderly people without family care. As the only Elderly Home in Prishtina, it accommodates approximately 80 residents.
Why did we choose the Elderly Home?
We have decided to help the elderly home people so that we can provide them with a better environment and better-living conditions. Since this is the only elderly home in Prishtina, we want to help this home in any way possible.
After having a conversation with the elders, we got a deep insight into their lives and what could possibly make this institution better for them. Based on their requirements, we concluded a number of things that we need to renovate and provide for them. Therefore, in order for us to be able to continue our initiative, we need a budget of €500 which will be used on the elders’ needs, such as:
– Planting trees and flowers
– Building tables and benches in the garden
– Building a veranda on the garden
– Providing them with hand-craft materials
Who are we?
We are a group of young people -Super-volunteers of the non-governmental organization TOKA, who by creating projects that are needed, want to make a difference in our community. Our group’s name is “UNITED” because we united to bring changes in Kosovo. We work enthusiastically every week to make a difference in our community.
The methodology that TOKA uses, Service Learning, is not very popular in Kosovo. It is a methodology used to empower youth to make changes in their communities. “Service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems, and at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding for themselves” Eyler and Giles, (1999).
By doing these kinds of projects we aim to serve our community based on its needs. By volunteering in these projects we are not only serving the community, but we are also gaining self-confidence while also developing transferable skills such as, team-building, critical thinking, problem solving, project and budget management skills and other excellent traits that will help us become a better version of ourselves.
