We need to detect COVID-19, to stop it!
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kosovo in partnership with KosovaIdeas, BONEVET and New Moment, need your help in purchasing RT-PCR test kits to slowdown and reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19. To address the immediate need for test kits in Kosovo, UNDP is expecting to collect EUR 61,344 to procure up to 2,500 test kit units.
Why test kits?
Testing offers a deeper insight into COVID-19 and its progression in a given community, as well as it enables doctors and health professionals to identify the infected individuals and take necessary health measures. Furthermore, it helps to inform the decisions on physical distancing and other preventive measures. Kosovo’s National Institute for Public Health (KNIPH), using RT-PCR method, is testing all suspected cases and their contacts on a regular basis. This means that the need for a steady supply, and availability, of test kits is imperative to protect the health of the citizens.
What is RT-PCR?
COVID-19 RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) tests provide one of the most effective methods for detecting the coronavirus. The test is conducted by extracting sputum — the substance that gets ejected through coughing, sneezing or spitting. This sample is then treated with chemical solutions that extract the coronavirus’ RNA, if present.
How do we get the test kits?
UNDP has access to global producers of these highly coveted laboratory materials through the Global Procurement Unit (GPU). This will allow us to purchase a larger quantity of test kits at lower prices thanks to the centrally managed long-term agreements and corporate partnerships. Since UNDP is not required to pay VAT and customs taxes, we will be able to secure more test kits at the given budget.
