Durmish Aslano & Romano Teatro: A brief history

Durmish Aslano was founded in 1996. Until 1999 it functioned as an artistic and cultural society. It was registered as a NGO in 2001, with the aim of representing the interests of the Roma community and advancing their position in Kosovo’s society. In this period we have organized different activities, some of them include: English language courses, IT courses, painting and journalism, etc. Our NGO has dealt with human rights as well and some cultural activities, where the most important are the theatrical performances. And concerts, where we represent the Roma culture (clothes, folklor, old songs).

The Roma theatre has performed a great number of plays, some of them were directed from different directors, and we treated educative-social themes. Today, the Roma Theatre has reached its peak of development and can easily be compared with other amateur theatre groups of Prizren.

AND TODAY WE ARE STILL IN PROCESS OF BEING FUNCTIONALIZED. 

Why Roma Theatre?

Based on the 30 year tradition, like every year, the Roma Theater of Prizren began the preparation of the annual performance, where it will address a very delicate issue this year, the life of the deceased poet, professor Kujtim Paçaku. The performance with the title “Once upon a time there was Kujtim Paçak” treated fragments from the life of Kujtim Paçaku. Most of the stage games are based on excerpts of his intellectual work, making a great contribution to our society. The poems that decipher the socio-economic life of the Roma, the culture and patriotism of the Roma, as well as our history, that of emigration from India to the present period. In the end, this play is also based on his two sayings as a poet, professor and politician: “We are obliged to be ahead as well as afterwards and we want integration without assimilation”.  

What do we want to achieve?

With this campaign we aim to achieve a great performance to honor professor Kujtim Paçaku, treating social, cultural, economic and political topics. This play will be performed on April 8, on the International Romani day. Our purpose is to publish a 30-year monograph of the Roma Theater. This monograph will influence the development of the Roma language and avoid the risk of extinction. Therefore we need your support for the play and for the publishing of the book.
